Cycling and Triathlon Mentoring | Precision Cycle Fit

Many people who come to Precision Cycle Fit for a bike fit find they get just as much from the conversation and all the questions they are able to ask during the process as they do from the bike fit itself.

Sometimes our combined enthusiasm can mean we veer away from the core purpose of achieving the optimum position so we’ve decided to offer a new service to provide advice, guidance and mentoring on all* aspects of Cycling and Triathlon. â€‹

Cycling and Triathlon are both glorious sports which reward both in sporting endeavor and the opportunity to buy spangly new kit.  I see many people who are new to the sport and having been successful in other elements of their life, want to be successful in their chosen hobby as well.  It is not unusual for a client to say:

“Just turned 40 and I’ve decided I’m going to do an Ironman next year.  Never cycled in my life.  Used to run for the school bus in the morning and I swim like a bunch of keys.  How should I get started?”

Some common answers to these questions are:

  1. Join a Triathlon or Cycling Club.

  2. Get a Coach or buy an online training plan.

  3. Subscribe to magazines such as 220 or Cycling Weekly, and vociferously read online cycling and triathlon websites (but beware, the latter may contain more misinformation than information).

Out of these three options, the one which ought to provide the most Personalised service is the Coach.  But coaches have limited time and mostly their field of expertise and interest is focused on physical training and race preparation.  They have not usually set their plan fees to include sufficient 1:1 time to discuss and answer the huge number of questions athletes may have.  This is where our Cycling and Triathlon Mentoring service comes in to play and helps to fill a gap in the current market.

If you’ve got this far, you can probably tell that I know a lot about bikes, have competed in a lot of different bike-based events and done so in many countries (see Palmares for more details).  This means I have experienced and overcome many of the circumstances you may currently be navigating.  In short, I have:

  • Had a coach, been self coached and then used a coach as a sounding board (much like this service).

  • Overtrained and had to take significant time out of sport during my "peak-athlete" years.

  • Suffered from “sports depression” and imposter syndrome.

  • Deduced through bitter experience that “Life Stress Score” is more important than “Training Stress Score”.

  • Purchased the wrong “best” kit.

  • “Bonked” before learning about sports nutrition.

  • Ignored and then seen the benefits of Core / Strength training and Skills Drills.

  • Cycled and raced triathlons overseas.

  • Suffered from a significant injury or mechanical issue before or during a major race.  Some of these are feartured in the "What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger" section of the Palmares page.

I’m not going to design you a training plan or look at your FTP progress in detail but if you want an opportunity to sit down with someone who will answer all your questions honestly (including, sometimes, “I don’t know, but we’ll find out”) then this is where you need to come.  Get in touch here and lets start talking.

*clearly I can’t know, and don’t claim to know, everything but I do know a lot and if my experience can help improve yours then I’d love to hear from you.
